Fractions

Some thoughts

It occurred to me that unit fractions are often introduced to students in this manner, perhaps because  the list can be continued as long as desired to the right. 

 

In reading and comparing numbers, the convention is that numbers to the left are less than those to the right. 

 

Do you think writing unit fractions in this manner sows misconceptions about size and order?

Classroom Ideas

Instructors should always complete a problem first before presenting the problem to students. That gives the instructor an opportunity to envision stumbling blocks, questions, and responses. Plus, you will notice that these interesting problems do not include answers!
