Questioning

Some thoughts

There is no doubt, students will ask themselves and others the same types of questions we model for them in the classroom. Teachers' questioning behavior goes beyond the kinds of questions which are asked.

Among other things, questions reveal:

     - who gets asked

     - who gets to ask

     - who gets to answer

     - the knowledge culture of the classroom

     - the type of dialogue that will continue after the question

I propose one of the greatest differences between many math departments and math education departments is the type of questions which are asked and the responses to answers.  Given the first sentence on this page, this influence is frightening given that many of our high school math teachers have the majority of their college experience in math departments.
