Assessment

Some thoughts

Assessment is a science unto itself, layered and nuanced with competing ideas about how student knowledge and ability should be measured and what results might signify.

I believe planning and teaching begins with an end goal. Many forms of assessing should happen along the way with the intent of understanding student progress toward that end goal and informing the next steps in learning and instruction.

Performance assessments are my favorite tool for understanding what students know and can do, but a variety of assessment methods in a teacher's toolbox allows flexibility in understanding student knowledge.
