Number Sense

Number sense may be one of my favorite areas to explore with students. There are so many directions to travel and so many surprises along the way.

I think our challenge as teachers is constantly pushing student thinking about our numerical world in different ways, such as looking at place value using a different base.

Number sense offers wonderful opportunities to move classroom questioning from factual to conceptual, and then on to generalizations. Exceptions to generalizations provide powerful ideas for our students to consider.
